Assistive Technology

Technology has opened the world to people with visual impairments, making it easier to be independent at home, school, work, and in the community.

Assistive technology includes many options, including smartphones, tablets, smart speakers, artificial intelligence glasses, apps, computer software, and video magnifiers (handheld, desktop, and wearables). Some devices can help you maximize your remaining vision, read the printed word to you, help you keep your calendar and provide reminders, and even assist you when navigating outside your home.

Technology Assessments and Training

IN-SIGHT has a partnership with New England Low Vision and Blindness to provide assessments and training to help you identify and learn how to use assistive technology solutions that can help you meet your independent living goals.

IN-SIGHT clients who are interested in training should complete the form below. Our staff will contact you to learn more about your goals, the technology you may currently be using, and the topics you would like to learn.

Depending on your situation, we may refer you to New England Low Vision and Blindness for an assessment. This two-hour in-home meeting will be facilitated by a trained assistive technology professional who will develop a better understanding of your needs.

If applicable, further training (up to six hours per year) may be provided in your home to help you achieve your learning goals.

Donors fund the cost of the assessment and training through IN-SIGHT’s Annual Fund Appeal.

Small Group Workshops

IN-SIGHT also periodically offers small-group workshops focused on a variety of assistive technology topics. These informational sessions provide a general overview of technology topics and are great for people who would like to learn more about the devices and apps currently available. Upcoming workshops can be found on our agency calendar.

Video Magnifier Rentals

A video magnifier, or closed-circuit television (CCTV), provides a magnified image for people with low vision, enabling them to maintain an independent lifestyle at work, home, or school. A video magnifier comprises a camera, a monitor, lighting, and, usually, a stand.

IN-SIGHT rents gently used video magnifiers for $20 per month (plus a small one-time delivery fee, if needed). The monthly fee is low enough to accommodate folks who may not be able to afford a new machine or those who would like to try the device out before purchasing a new one. IN-SIGHT does not sell new machines, but we can recommend area dealers who do.
