Certified Orientation & Mobility Specialist

The Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) provides individual and small group instruction that helps people who are visually impaired and blind to safely, confidently, and independently access their homes, workplaces, schools, and communities.

The COMS will work primarily with senior adults who have developed a vision impairment later in life; however, they may also work with a limited number of students through contracts with local school systems.

This is a full–time (Monday through Friday, 8 AM – 4 PM) office-based position. The COMS works as part of an interdisciplinary team that includes a vision rehabilitation teacher, a social worker, an assistive technology teacher, and an optometrist.

Salary Range: $85,000 – $95,000 annually

Essential Functions

  • Assist clients in developing mobility goals.
  • Develop training schedules and lesson plans to address individual client needs.
  • Complete progress reports, maintain service records (monthly statistics), and attend regularly scheduled department meetings.
  • Work with clients in their home situations as a transition to the completion of the program.
  • Conduct public education workshops for allied professionals and client families.

Educational Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in Vision Studies
  • ACVREP Certification in Orientation and Mobility

  • Must competently use Microsoft Office, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook; web browsers; and other technology as necessary.

  • Must understand and respect confidentiality, be assertive, be able to think strategically, prioritize, focus, and be client-oriented.

Mental, Physical, and Communications Demands

  • Access to reliable transportation for participation in client training and activities outside of the building is required.
  • Must have strong written and spoken English skills. Fluency in Spanish is desirable as well, but not a requirement.
  • Must perform a variety of tasks that require sitting, standing, and occasionally lifting to 25 pounds.
